SUMMARY: Airmail Beacons were designed to make night airmail flights possible after World War 1 before the invention of radar technology. The Post Office built the first lighted airway between Dayton and Columbus, Ohio in 1923.
Towers were spaced about 10-15 miles apart and were visible up to 40 miles away. More than 1500 beacons were built across the United States. The airmail beacons were abandoned during WW2.
