WHEN: 1899 - 1910
SUMMARY: In the era of the pioneers, Galconda served as a favored stopping point for those journeying along the California Trail due to its popular hot springs.
In 1868, the location was established as a station on the Central Pacific Railroad. Following the resurgence of mining activities in the region, a narrow gauge railway was constructed to facilitate the transportation of ore from the Adelaide mines and nearby sites in 1899. The mines and mill closed in 1900.
In 1907, mining began once again. However, it was short lived and the mines, mill, and railroad shutdown in 1910.
We hiked a few miles along the old railroad grade only to find a couple of old railroad spikes.
