SUMMARY: Stony Point is a notable location on the California Emigrant Trail, recognized for its volcanic rock formations and violent past.
The years 1856 to 1857 are often referred to as the "Bloody Years." Numerous accounts in the journals of pioneers who traversed this region document the clashes between settlers and Native Americans, notably including the "Holloway Massacre" that occurred in 1857.
In 1879, a carpenter named Hirum Carter, who was unemployed at the time, constructed a memorial that stood 4 feet tall and extended over a mile in length, commemorating the hardships endured by pioneers during their journey along the California Trail. It is known as Carter's Monument.
