Gold was found in this location in 1862. The establishment of the town of Bannack occurred later in the same year, and a post office commenced operations in November 1863. The post office closed in 1938.


The town of Bannack housed hotels, saloons, grocery stores, blacksmith shops, and various other enterprises.


Bannack was designated as the capital of Montana in 1864. However, this status was temporary. By 1866, the capital was relocated to Virginia City, Montana.


Sheriff Henry Plummer of the town was charged with orchestrating a group of thieves and murderers. Plummer was executed by hanging in 1864 by the Vigilante Commitee. You can read more of the story here:




Today, the town of Bannack is preserved as a state park.
