SUMMARY: The town was established in 1864, soon after the discovery of gold in the Alder Gulch region. Virginia City, Montana served as the capital of Montana from 1865 to 1875.
One of the wealthiest gold mining regions in America, generating over $50 million in gold.
In its formative years, Virginia City was recognized as a lawless and tumultuous settlement. The so-called "Road Agents" were accountable for the deaths of approximately 100 individuals between 1863 and 1864. Incidents of death and robbery were prevalent, ultimately resulting in the establishment of Montana's Vigilantes.
The Montana Vigilantes executed as many as 15 "Road Agents" between December 1863 and January 1864. Including the Sheriff of nearby Bannack.
Today, Virginia City is designated as an historic landmark.
