SUMMARY: Silver was first discovered near Cerro Gordo in 1865. Mining continued off and on until about 1933.
The town sits at an elevation of 8,300 feet and is a steep mountain climb from the town of Keeler.
Los Angeles was the main recipient of Cerro Gordo’s silver. Mule freight teams transported ore and bullion more than 250 miles to Los Angeles.
The original American Hotel was destroyed by fire in 2020. A new hotel is currently being constructed. You can see some old pictures of the original hotel below.
