WHEN: 1905-1920
POST OFFICE: 1905 - 1913
POPULATION: 10,000 peak
SUMMARY: Gold was found in the Bullfrog Mining District in 1904, which resulted in the establishment of the town of Rhyolite in 1905.
At its height, Rhyolite was inhabited by almost 10,000 people. The inhabitants of Rhyolite benefited from concrete sidewalks, electricity, indoor plumbing, and telephones. Rhyolite also had three railroad companies servicing the town.
The Rhyolite boom was short-lived. By 1908, mining activities had already begun to decline. The post office was closed in 1913. The rail lines halted operations in 1914, and by 1916, the power company discontinued electricity supply to the town.
Less than one hundred people call Rhyolite home in 1920.
