SUMMARY: Gold was first discovered in 1863. A townsite was established in 1866, with the Post Office commencing operations in 1871. The town featured saloons, a park, a school, and various other businesses. Galena almost became the county seat of Humboldt County, until the town was moved to Lander County in 1874.


Mining mostly ended by 1886, although some mining continued all the way up to the 1960's. The structures that remain today are from recent years.
