POPULATION: 1500 - 2000

SUMMARY: Upper Rochester was first discovered in the 1860s, during which only limited mining activities occurred. In 1912, the discovery of abundant silver ore initiated a significant economic boom. Upper Rochester was home to hotels, saloons, and other businesses, while Lower Rochester built milling and other supporting operations. Today, Upper Rochester is buried below tailings from a newer active mine.

The majority of the ruins in Lower Rochester were consumed by fire in 2012.

The Nevada Short Line Railway was constructed in 1914 for the purpose of transporting ore from Lower Rochester. The endeavor was consistently unsuccessful and frequently hindered by mechanical problems, primarily because the equipment was predominantly acquired second-hand.

In June 1918, a sudden flash flood in Rochester Canyon inflicted significant damage on the railroad infrastructure. Given the company's existing financial difficulties, it was unable to undertake the necessary repairs. Consequently, the Nevada Short Line Railway dismantled the tracks in November 1919.

By 1926, the economic boom had largely subsided, leading to a decrease in population. Although mining operations persisted following the closure of the Post Office in Upper Rochester in 1926, by 1947, the majority of mining activities had come to an end, and the town was predominantly deserted by 1950.
