POST OFFICE: 1878 - 1901

SUMMARY: Gold was found in the region in 1867. The population of the area started to increase in 1875 along with the completion of the first of three mills. And by 1880, approximately 200 individuals had made it their residence. By 1881, about 700 hundred people lived in Lewis.
The township of Lewis was founded on April 1, 1878, and a post office was subsequently established on April 5, 1878. A school district was established in 1879.
In 1881 the Central Nevada Railroad built a spur from the main track into Lewis.
In December of 1881, a fire erupted, resulting in the devastation of a significant portion of the town. In 1882, an explosion at the nearby Betty O'Neil Mine shut down most of the mining in the area. A few residents stayed and continued to mine the area, keeping the post office open until 1901. The railroad to Lewis was not used after 1885, and by 1890, the tracks were removed.
