WHEN: 1910-1950
POST OFFICE: 1912-1942
POPULATION: 700
SUMMARY: Metropolis, in contrast to the majority of ghost towns in Nevada, was established primarily as an agricultural and farming community rather than as a result of a mining boom. Found by the Pacific Reclamation Company from New York in 1910.
The town was designed to support a population of up to 7500 people. The first year was its best year, with a population reaching about 700.
Droughts, jack rabbits, and mormon crickets eventually led to the fall of Metropolis.
