Silver was discovered here in 1864. And its most productive mine, the Northern Belle Mine began producing rich silver ore in 1873. By 1875 it was the largest producing silver mine in Southwestern Nevada.

The town had a major problem though. A lack of water. There was not enough water nearby to support both the town, and the mill. This caused the mill to operate as a "dry" mill causing hazard dust to cover the town. Many folks suffered from a respiratory disease known as "miners consumption". And due to the lack of water, whiskey was known to be cheaper than water. As water sold for $2 a gallon.

A twenty-seven-mile piping system from the White Mountains to town was constructed in 1882 which help alleviate the cost of water. Dropping the price of water to pennies per gallon.

In 1882, the Carson and Colorado Railroad completed a branch line to the town. This help to bring much needed supplies to the town including water. The mines boomed for another ten years.

By 1893, America was in a depression and financial investments in the mines dried up. The town would struggle for years, and the Carson and Colorado Railroad abandoned the branch around 1932. The post office would eventually close in 1935.

Here's a few pictures of our trip in January 2024 via the Carson and Colorado Railroad.

Enjoy!
